Nissan launches X-Trail NISMO version, to be sold in the Japanese market on September 24

[PCauto] Nissan has recently launched its first X-Trail NISMO model in Japan, officially introducing this family SUV into the performance-oriented segment.

The X-Trail NISMO is built on the fourth-generation X-Trail (T33) platform, blending NISMO’s racing DNA with everyday practicality, aiming to deliver a “Grand Touring SUV” driving experience. The X-Trail NISMO was unveiled on August 21, 2025, and is scheduled for sale in the Japanese market starting on September 24, but it is currently limited to the Japanese market.

X-Trail NISMO Powertrain retains the standard version’s e-POWER hybrid technology

The X-Trail NISMO is equipped with a 1.5L VC-Turbo three-cylinder gasoline engine serving as a generator to supply power to the dual electric motors on the front and rear axles. The front motor delivers 150kW/330Nm, while the rear motor provides 100kW/195Nm, resulting in a combined power output of 213 horsepower (approximately 211 BHP) and 525Nm of torque.

The system does not require external charging and offers a pure electric driving experience. The e-4ORCE electronic all-wheel-drive system has been specially tuned, increasing rear-wheel drive distribution to enhance cornering stability and acceleration performance.

The vehicle control module (VCM) introduces SPORT mode and AUTO mode. SPORT mode prioritizes responsiveness, while AUTO mode emphasizes comfort during medium- to high-speed acceleration.

Exterior Design Improvements Boost Aerodynamic Performance

The exterior design emphasizes aerodynamic efficiency, with the front featuring dark chrome accents and a front splitter with the NISMO logo. The side skirts and rear diffuser are accented with red highlights. The overall design reduces lift by 29% without increasing drag. Color options include Stealth Grey (with black roof), Cardinal Red, Prism White, Dark Metal Grey, and Diamond Black.

In terms of interior, the X-Trail NISMO features a black base with red accents, maintaining the comfort and practicality of the X-Trail. Standard features include a 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster and infotainment screen (navigation available on higher trims), wireless Apple CarPlay (Android Auto requires a wired connection), wireless charging, and hands-free electric tailgate (on Ti/Ti-L trims).

The optional NISMO-tuned Recaro sport seats offer electric adjustments and heating functions, enhancing support to minimize body movement during cornering. Safety features include the Nissan Intelligent Mobility system with standard AEB and lane-keeping assistance. Higher trims add blind-spot monitoring and adaptive cruise control.

Suspension Optimization Enhances Handling Performance

The suspension system has been upgraded to Kayaba Swing Valve shock absorbers, marking Nissan’s first use of this technology. It aims to balance the handling stability and ride comfort of a high-body SUV.

The vehicle height is reduced by 29% to increase downforce and improve high-speed stability. The tires are equipped with the Michelin Pilot Sport EV series, while the 20-inch wheels are made of Enkei aluminum alloy using MAT manufacturing technology, offering both lightweight construction and high rigidity.

X-Trail Models Vary By Region

In the global market, X-Trail models differ by region. The 2025 X-Trail in the Australian market has undergone technological upgrades, with keyless entry/exit with auto-lock functionality added across all trims. The ST-L and above trims feature a 12.3-inch infotainment screen and wireless charging as standard, with powertrain options including a 2.5L naturally aspirated petrol engine (184 horsepower) or e-POWER hybrid (213 horsepower).

In the Malaysian market, the third-generation facelift (T32) is still on sale, offering a 2.0L 2WD (144 horsepower, 7-seater) and a 2.0L Hybrid (144 horsepower + 41 horsepower electric motor, 5-seater) version.

Other market dynamics include: India will launch the X-Trail in August 2024, offering only the 1.5T mild hybrid version; the European market has been selling it since September 2022, with options for a 1.5T mild hybrid or e-POWER all-wheel drive.

However, the launch of the X-Trail NISMO has not yet extended to these regions, as Nissan aims to enhance its brand image through such performance-oriented versions while leveraging e-POWER technology to address global electrification trends.

X-Trail Continues to Attract Family Users Worldwide

All along, the X-Trail has continued to attract family users worldwide. This model balances practicality and a sense of technology, while the NISMO version targets a niche audience seeking a sporty style.

Although the Nissan X-Trail NISMO’s power output has not been enhanced, driving enjoyment has been improved through adjustments to the suspension, all-wheel-drive system, and design. In the future, Nissan may expand the NISMO version to other regions to enhance the X-Trail’s brand image.
