Perodua Axia Hits 790,000 Sales: What Makes It So Popular?

【PCauto】Perodua Axia has become a true phenomenon. By July 2025, this microcar has sold over 790,000 units, reaching a total of 794,760.
An Average of 223 Axia Cars Are Sold Every Day
Axia’s sales numbers are impressive. In the first half of 2025, the model sold 40,653 units, averaging 223 cars per day. This strong performance keeps it in third place on Malaysia’s overall car sales chart.
In June 2025 alone, Axia sold 5,207 units, earning the runner-up spot for monthly sales. Within the Perodua lineup, Axia makes up 24.5% of total sales. Together with its sibling model Bezza, the two account for half of the brand’s overall sales.
Why Is the Axia So Popular?
The Perodua Axia’s popularity comes down to several key factors.
First, its ultra-low starting price of RM23,367 makes it the most affordable new car in Malaysia. It’s an ideal choice for budget-conscious young buyers and first-time car owners.
Second, the Axia features a 1.0L three-cylinder naturally aspirated engine developed with Toyota technology. The version with a 4AT transmission delivers an impressive 21.6km/L fuel efficiency, keeping running costs very low.
Space is another strong point. Despite being an A-segment car, the Axia offers a 260L trunk and passenger room comparable to the Myvi, comfortably meeting daily needs. Its 4.5-meter minimum turning radius makes city driving easy and convenient.
The Axia also stands out for its features. The top-spec AV model, priced at RM41,427, comes with advanced safety equipment like automatic emergency braking and earns a 4-star ASEAN NCAP rating. Maintenance is very affordable, with minor services costing only RM150-RM280. Thanks to Toyota-backed durability, the car holds its value well, with a 2017 G version still selling for RM25,000-RM27,000 on the second-hand market.
Finally, the Axia appeals to car enthusiasts thanks to a wide range of modification options, from styling upgrades to performance enhancements. Together, these qualities make the Axia a perfect match for Malaysian drivers looking for economy, practicality, and reliability.
Who Is Buying the Axia?
In Malaysia, the Axia and Proton Saga together control 68% of the B-segment market.
Buyer profiles show that 81% of Axia owners are first-time car buyers, and women make up 47% of the customer base. These numbers highlight just how widely the Axia is accepted.
The Axia also performs well in export markets. Sold as the Daihatsu Sirion, it recorded a cumulative 92,000 units exported between 2023 and 2025.
Economy and practical sedans like the Axia still have plenty of room to grow. With Perodua’s annual production capacity of 120,000 units, the brand is well-positioned to keep meeting strong demand.
