Tesla launches 2025.26 software update, bringing the Grok in-car AI assistant for U.S. owners

【PCauto】Tesla has recently rolled out the 2025.26 software update to U.S. customers, officially introducing the Grok AI assistant into its in-vehicle system. This marks the first time that the generative AI developed by Elon Musk’s xAI, a technology company, has expanded beyond social media platforms into the automotive sector.

Grok is available on Tesla models manufactured from 2020 onward.

Integrated into Tesla’s infotainment system as a beta AI assistant, Grok offers core functions such as real-time information searching, personalized entertainment recommendations, and natural language interaction. It can be activated with the “Hey Tesla” voice command.

It’s worth noting that Grok currently serves as an information platform only and does not handle any vehicle control functions. Operations like AC control and navigation settings remain managed by the original voice command system and the Grok is not directly linked to the Full Self-Driving (FSD) system.

Grok runs a lightweight model on the vehicle side, while more complex processing relies on Tesla’s Dojo supercomputer via cloud support–requiring a Premium Connectivity subscription. Tesla has confirmed that Grok is compatible with vehicles equipped with Hardware 3.0 or above. Specifically, it supports models with AMD infotainment processors, including the Model S, Model 3, Model X, Model Y, and Cybertruck.

Grok has three salient features in Tesla’s infotainment system.

The first lies in its real-time data advantage: by connecting directly to the X platform (formerly Twitter), Grok can provide traffic updates based on social media activity—such as live updates on charging station availability and unexpected traffic events. However, any route changes still require manual confirmation from the driver.

The second standout feature is its unique interaction style, which carries over the witty and conversational tone familiar from the X platform. User testing shows that Grok can provide personalized suggestions in response to open-ended prompts, such as “recommend interesting places nearby.”

The third feature is Tesla’s strict boundary setting. While Mercedes-Benz’s integration of ChatGPT enables certain vehicle control functions, and NIO’s NOMI system supports full voice-based operation, Tesla has chosen to limit Grok strictly to information services. This cautious approach reduces safety risks but also limits functionality.

The update has not yet been released outside the U.S. due to regulatory restrictions.

The current version of Grok is region-limited and European and Asian customers are not the beneficiaries, mainly due to data compliance challenges: the EU’s GDPR enforces strict rules on cross-border data transfers from the X platform, while China’s data localization policies require tailored technical solutions.

Although the U.S. National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has stated that it will not regulate “non-driving-related” AI functions for now, Tesla is still required to report any major functional changes. Another growing concern is information reliability—misleading content on the X platform, such as false traffic alerts, could potentially influence driving decisions. As noted in the update release notes, Tesla advises users to independently verify any critical information.
