Honda’s Major Recall: Faulty Fuel Pumps Affect 90,000 Vehicles in Malaysia
RobertJun 18, 2025, 11:00 AM

【PCauto】Honda Malaysia has issued an official announcement recalling 87,490 vehicles currently on the market to replace potentially defective high-pressure fuel pumps. This action is directly linked to Honda’s global recall campaign addressing the same component flaw, making it one of the largest automotive recalls in Malaysia for 2024.
Defect Is Caused by Substandard Materials
The core issue of the recall is the high-pressure fuel pump manufactured by Denso of Japan. According to technical reports, the impeller inside the pump is made from resin, whose gasoline corrosion resistance fails to meet design standards. After prolonged use, long-term immersion in gasoline may cause the impeller to swell and deform, impairing rotation.
If the fuel pump fails, vehicles will face two primary risks: sudden engine stall with loss of power during operation, or abnormal fuel system conditions that may cause localized overheating – presenting potential fire hazards. Many owners have reported on social media that warning signs include difficult starting, acceleration hesitation, and unexplained illumination of the engine warning light. In some cases, engines stalled even during highway driving.

Recall May Primarily Affect Best-Sellers: Accord, Civic, CR-V
Although Honda Malaysia has not yet released the complete list of affected models, based on Honda’s global recall information and local sales structure, industry experts speculate that the vehicles likely involved include the 2023-2024 Accord, 2025 Civic, and 2023-2025 CR-V Hybrid variants.
These three models are best sellers of Honda in Malaysia, among them, the CR-V Hybrid is particularly popular with family users for its high fuel efficiency. Notably, the scale of this recall exceeds 40% of Honda Malaysia’s total 2023 sales, showing the widespread nature of the issue.

Free Replacement but Requires Waiting
Honda Malaysia has committed to providing free fuel pump replacements for all recalled vehicles, owners can receive notifications via registered mail and SMS. However, some customers who proactively contacted dealers have reported that certain service centers are experiencing shortages of replacement parts and limited availability of replacement.
A vehicle owner from Selangor revealed that their appointment was scheduled three weeks later, and the dealer advised that “if there is no urgent malfunction, the replacement can be postponed, but long-distance driving should be avoided.” In response, Honda stated that it is improving its supply chain to expedite parts distribution and recommended that owners use the official website’s VIN lookup tool to confirm whether their vehicle is included in the recall list.

Faulty Fuel Pump Triggers Mass Recalls across Japanese Brands
This incident has once again exposed the risks of the automotive industry’s supply chain. As an affiliate of the Toyota Group, Denso’s defective fuel pumps have triggered large-scale recalls across multiple Japanese brands. In 2020, Honda recalled 1.36 million vehicles in North America for the same issue, while Toyota’s global accumulative recall has exceeded 3.3 million units.
Interestingly, recall in some markets (such as China) were initiated two years later than in North America, sparking car owners’ concerns about the responsiveness of automakers. The Malaysian Consumer Association has called on regulators to require automakers to show the timeline of defect investigations to evaluate whether there were delays in initiating recalls.

Essential Recommendations for Owners
Regarding this recall, automotive technical experts have offered three practical recommendations: if vehicles exhibit symptoms like extended starting time, unstable idling, or weak acceleration, owners should immediately contact dealers for inspection; before long-distance trips, owners can check recall status by entering the 17-digit VIN on Honda’s official website; and while awaiting repairs, avoid maintaining the fuel tank at long-term low levels to reduce the workload of the fuel pump.
As of this report, Honda Malaysia has not disclosed estimated costs for the recall. Analysts note that replacing a single fuel pump assembly may cost approximately RM800 to RM1,500, and total expenses potentially reach RM70 million. Further developments, including whether additional unannounced models may also be recalled, are yet to be officially disclosed
