2026 Toyota Hilux Interior Unveiled, and It’s Giving Prado Vibes

【PCauto】Patent images and spec sheets of the 2026 Toyota Hilux have surfaced online, hinting at a major interior overhaul for the world’s best-selling pickup. While the new Hilux will stick with its proven mechanical platform, Toyota seems ready to shake things up inside the cabin. The refreshed Hilux is expected to hit Southeast Asian showrooms in the first half of 2026.
Interior Gets a More Tech-Savvy Makeover
According to the latest patent leaks, the Hilux is ditching its old-school, retro cabin for a layout that feels much closer to the Land Cruiser Prado.
The dashboard features a clean, layered design with a floating 12.3-inch touchscreen sitting on top. Entry-level models might get a smaller 8-inch version, but the overall layout stays the same. The traditional analog dials are gone as well. A fully digital instrument cluster now sits behind the steering wheel, giving the Hilux a much-needed modern touch.

The air conditioning controls stick with physical buttons and knobs, placed right below the air vents for easy access. The new electronic gear shifter and rotary dial for the four-wheel-drive system are designed to make every shift feel more precise.
Toyota also made smart improvements to the storage layout. The front passenger side now gets dual drawer-style glove boxes, and there’s a dedicated phone tray built into the center console. With the old mechanical handbrake replaced by an electronic switch, the center tunnel has been opened up to create extra storage space.

Toyota has also stepped up its game when it comes to materials. Soft-touch leather now covers much more of the cabin, giving it a more upscale feel. Higher trims are expected to offer ventilated seats, which is a first for the Hilux.
This upgrade isn’t just for show. In a 2024 Australian consumer report, 27% of buyers said they switched to the Ford Ranger because they were unhappy with the current Hilux’s interior quality. Toyota is clearly listening this time.
Appearance Tweaks Boost Practicality
The update focuses on thoughtful details. Up front, slimmer LED headlamps now feature signature C-shaped daytime running lights. The bumper design is squarer, adding extra toughness and better protection for off-road adventures.

The rear features a continuous design, with tail lights stretching toward the sides of the cargo bed to create a distinctive C-shaped light strip. The rear bumper takes things up a notch by integrating fold-out side steps, a clever touch borrowed from the Ford Ranger. This makes loading and unloading gear much easier for users.
New Hilux Sticks With Familiar Tech Underpinnings
The 2026 Hilux sticks with an improved version of the current IMV ladder frame platform, not the TNGA-F architecture you find on North America’s Tacoma and Tundra. The chassis keeps the tried-and-true setup: front double-wishbone independent suspension paired with rear leaf springs. However, Toyota has retuned the spring rates and damper settings to make the ride more comfortable on the road.
This choice clearly balances cost and reliability. The IMV platform has already proven its corrosion resistance in Southeast Asia’s hot, humid climate. Switching to the TNGA-F would have pushed production costs up, potentially hiking the final price by more than 15%.

Powertrain Keeps the Tried and True Setup
Most trims stick with the 2.8-liter 1GD-FTV turbo diesel paired with a 48V mild hybrid system. Together they pump out 150 kW and 500 Nm of torque. The gearbox stays at a 6-speed automatic, with no upgrade to an 8-speed this time. For those looking for something simpler, the base model keeps the 2.7-liter naturally aspirated gas engine with 122 kW and 245 Nm, making entry a bit easier on the wallet.
The 48V mild hybrid system gets a boost as well. It can now run the A/C compressor independently when crawling at low speeds, cutting engine idle fuel use by about 8 percent.

Hilux Faces Three Big Challenges in the Market
First, the Ford Ranger holds a clear performance edge with its V6 turbo engine pushing 292 kW and an advanced four-wheel-drive system.
Second, Chinese brands are making aggressive moves. GWM PORE has climbed to a 12% market share in Thailand in just two years. Meanwhile, BYD Shark is pulling in commercial buyers with a five-year free charging plan.
Third, Southeast Asian countries are shifting toward electric vehicle policies. Malaysia has raised road taxes on diesel vehicles. Thailand offers a subsidy of 150,000 THB for each electric car sold.
To fight back against the Ranger, Toyota plans to roll out a TRD Pro off-road special edition. It will come with FOX performance shocks and a steel skid plate to go head-to-head with the Ranger Raptor.
Interior Upgrades Will Help, but Electrification Delay Could Hurt Hilux
While the fresh interior boosts Hilux’s appeal, its slow move toward electrification might be a problem down the road. Toyota insiders say a fully electric Hilux won’t arrive until after 2027. In markets like Malaysia and Thailand, where EV incentives are strong, the traditional powertrain could face heavier taxes and fees.
