Mazda CX-80 enters Malaysian market, expected starting price RM280,000

[PCauto] The official social media account of Mazda Malaysia has released a teaser video for the CX-80, showcasing the silhouette of the sleek SUV with light and shadow effects, clearly pointing to the premium three-row seat model.

Mazda CX-80 Will Be Sold as an Import from Japan

This teaser, based on the positioning of the CX-80 in the European and Japanese markets, suggests that the vehicle will be launched in Malaysia.

According to market analysis, the Mazda CX-80 is expected to be priced starting from RM280,000, targeting the premium SUV market.

The CX-80 will be imported as a CBU (completely built-up) unit from Japan, consistent with Mazda’s long-standing strategy in Southeast Asia.

The CX-80 is built on the Skyactiv Multi-Solution Scalable architecture, featuring a rear-wheel-drive layout, luxurious interior, and smart technology, catering to the electrification trend.

The body dimensions are expected to be 4,990mm (length) x 1,890mm (width) x 1,720mm (height), with a 3,000mm wheelbase, comparable in size to models like the Volvo XC90, offering 2+3+2 seven-seat or 2+2+2 six-seat configurations.

Mazda CX-80 Offers Two Powertrain Options

3.3L inline-six turbocharged diesel engine (output 250PS/550Nm) and 2.5L PHEV plug-in hybrid system (combined output 327PS).

The diesel version comes with a 48V mild hybrid system, 0-100km/h acceleration in 8.4 seconds, a top speed of 219km/h, and a combined fuel consumption of 5.8L/100km; PHEV version achieves 0-100km/h in 6.8 seconds, a top speed of 195km/h, a pure electric range of 60 kilometers, and a combined fuel consumption as low as 1.6L/100km.

However, the Malaysian version may adjust the powertrain to cater to local market demands. Referring to the configuration of the CX-60 in Malaysia, it uses a 2.5L SkyActiv-G naturally aspirated engine instead of the internationally mainstream larger displacement options. The CX-80 might similarly prioritize economic benefits and may come with a 2.5L SkyActiv-Turbo engine.

Mazda CX-80 to be showcased at the Malaysia Autoshow

Dealers revealed that the actual vehicle might debut at the Malaysia Autoshow in September 2025, with first deliveries expected in the fourth quarter of 2025.

The right-hand-drive version is already available in the UK market, facilitating its introduction to Malaysia. The localized configuration will include a 12.3-inch central screen, 12-speaker Bose sound system, heated/ventilated second-row seats, a panoramic sunroof, and rear privacy glass.

Safety features will include the complete i-Activsense semi-autonomous driving assistance system, achieving Level 2 autonomous driving, ensuring competitiveness.

Three-row SUVs are growing increasingly popular in Malaysia

The demand for SUVs in Malaysia continues to grow, especially for three-row models, favored by family users and high-end consumers. Mazda Malaysia distributor Bermaz Auto Berhad (Bermaz) aims to use the CX-80 to enhance the brand’s premium image by building interest through early showcases.

However, challenges exist as Malaysian consumers have a low acceptance of large-displacement engines, and the CBU import method may lead to price sensitivity.

The journey of the Mazda CX-80 in Malaysia marks the brand’s efforts towards premiumization in the Southeast Asian market. Its success will depend on localization adaptation, pricing strategy, and consumer acceptance.

As the auto show approaches, the market eagerly awaits details of the real car and the official price announcement, which will determine whether the CX-80 can stand out in the fiercely competitive SUV segment.
