Tesla Launches Lock Screen Charging Monitoring in iOS App

【PCauto】Tesla has introduced a “Live Activities” feature in its latest iOS app (version 4.45.0), allowing owners to monitor charging status at Superchargers without unlocking their phones.

Charging Status Now Visible on iPhone Lock Screen

The feature will be automatically activated only when the vehicle is connected to a Tesla Supercharger. No user setup is required—real-time charging data immediately appears on the iPhone lock screen once charging begins. This creates a clear distinction from third-party or home charging solutions (like Wall Connectors), as Tesla exclusively offers this function for its proprietary charging network.

The App Displays Six Core Data in Real-Time:

– Live-updating charge percentage (e.g., 72% → 73%)

– Remaining charging time (in minutes, not approximate estimates)

– Current charging power (precise to one decimal place, in kW)

– Charging rate (mph, providing range awareness)

– Energy delivered (kWh, directly relevant to cost calculation)

– Estimated cost (a key updated metric)

The cost estimation feature relies on local electricity rates, with data consistent with the vehicle’s display. All information refreshes every 10 seconds, though the lock screen does not show parameters like battery temperature.

Only iPhone 14 Pro and newer models (featuring Dynamic Island) display a clear view at the top of the screen, showing charge percentage and remaining time. Standard models show the full data stream on the lock screen.

If the Tesla app’s background process is manually force-closed, Live Activities will immediately terminate. To keep the feature active, the app must remain running in the background.

This feature was developed alongside the 2024 Apple Watch car key function, with the watch interface displaying three data vertically (charge percentage + remaining time + charging power).

The Primary Purpose of This Update Is to Prevent Overtime Charging Fees

The moment charging completes, both the lock screen and Apple Watch will simultaneously show a “Please move your vehicle” notification, which is particularly crucial at busy Supercharger stations—where overtime occupancy fees typically exceed 55 MYR.

While the cost estimation feature has raised some user concerns about pricing transparency at third-party chargers, Tesla’s implementation of real-time billing visualization within its own ecosystem may propel the evolution of industry standards.

Checking Efficiency Is Improved While Some Limitations Still Exist

The update significantly enhances convenience for owners—while dining or shopping, they no longer need to pull out their phone, unlock it, open the app, and navigate to the charging page. A quick glance at their watch or phone lock screen is now sufficient to check charging progress. Real-world testing shows approximately a 70% improvement in checking efficiency.

However, the feature currently has three clear limitations:

1. It only works with Tesla’s Supercharger network (V3/V4 stalls);

2. Third-party app integration (e.g., Electrify America) is not supported;

3. Simultaneous monitoring of multiple vehicles is unavailable.

Technical documentation reveals that the underlying framework could be extended to support additional services in the future, such as Supercharger queue wait times and roadside assistance progress tracking. Additionally, based on data from Tesla’s 2024 Robotaxi prototype road tests, this live activity feature may evolve into an interface for monitoring autonomous driving services. However, Tesla has not yet confirmed specific plans for such implementations.
