Never Leave Kids Behind Again: Tesla’s New Radar-Based Detection

【PCauto】Recently, Tesla introduced the “Child Pressence Detection” system via an OTA update, a feature made possible by the in-cabin millimeter-wave radar pre-installed three years ago.

60GHz Millimeter-Wave Radar Was Already Installed in Vehicles
Tesla’s implementation of in-cabin radar began in 2022. At the time, certain Model Y vehicles with chassis numbers ending in “F” were equipped with a 60GHz millimeter-wave radar module, though it remained dormant until this year when it was gradually activated across different models.
The radar module is discreetly positioned in the overhead console area, making it virtually unnoticeable to consumers. It wasn’t until the February 2025.2.6 software update—which enabled the radar to detect occupants for adjusting airbag deployment timing and pressure—that people became aware of its presence.
The Radar Can Precisely Detect Children Inside the Vehicle
The key purpose of this upgrade is to address the issue of parents accidentally leaving children in the rear seat (whether asleep or secured in a car seat) after leaving the vehicle.
The system detects children by analyzing phase changes in radar echos, identifying chest cavity expansion and contraction of 0.1-0.5 millimeters and capturing about 50 microns of periodic vibration on the body surface. If both conditions are met, the system will judge that there are children in the vehicle and trigger a three-stage alert upon locking the car: in-vehicle horn alarm → mobile app notification → automatic activation of the HVAC system.
Compared with industrial mainstream solutions, Tesla’s in-car millimeter wave radar offers superior penetration capabilities. Operating at 60GHz, it can detect through lightweight obstructions like plush toys and thin blankets, functions without requiring light, and avoids the privacy concerns caused by in-car cameras.

Child Presence Detection Could Be Life-Saving in Summer
Currently, the first compatible models are part of 2022 Model Y vehicles, with North America receiving phased OTA updates while other regions remain pending. To check whether your Tesla has this feature, navigate to “Software > Additional Vehicle Info” on the touchscreen and look for the “In-Cabin Radar” status.

“Child Presence Detection” is especially critical during summer heatwaves, as a closed car’s interior temperature can soar above 60 degrees Celsius within just 10 minutes. Tesla’s innovation represents an improvement of vehicle safety mechanisms—from crash protection to everyday safeguarding—achieved by sensor technology. However, it’s important to note that the feature is not yet available across all models, so drivers should still maintain a habit of double-checking when traveling with children.
