Final Edition: Honda’s Last Civic TYPE R – Limited Run before Euro Exit

【PCauto】Honda Civic TYPE R is set to cease sales in Europe, and as a farewell, Honda has specially launched a limited edition named the Civic TYPE R Ultimate Edition.

Upon the announcement, especially the release of the limited edition, it immediately sparked a strong reaction in the market. The already highly popular Civic TYPE R had a surge in the prices of its used cars. Taking the UK market as an example, the used price of the current model has reportedly skyrocketed by over 30% of its original selling price, demonstrating the fans’ deep appreciation and sentimental attachment. The scarcity of the Ultimate Edition has further heightened expectations for its collectible value.

Civic TYPE R Ultimate Edition Limited to 20 Units

The Ultimate Edition, built on the current FL5 Civic TYPE R, holds significance far beyond a simple configuration upgrade.It uses the “Championship White” paint, the most iconic and track-inspired color in the history of Civic TYPE R, complemented by striking red accents to create a strong visual impact. The wheels have been upgraded to lighter BBS forged rims paired with high-grip Michelin Cup 2 track-oriented tires—a combination that undoubtedly enhances the car’s cornering limits for drivers seeking ultimate handling.

Honda’s engineers have also optimized the chassis, unlocking even greater track potential for this front-wheel-drive performance benchmark. To highlight its exclusivity, each Ultimate Edition owns a unique numbered plaque and certificate. It is reported that this ultimate version is priced at approximately €50,000 in Europe (around 1,965,000 THB or 258,000 MYR), with only 20 units available for sale.

European Emissions & Safety Rules End Sales

The limited release and discontinuation of the Civic TYPE R in Europe are directly caused by increasingly stringent environmental regulations.

Powered by the K20C1 2.0T engine, which delivers 329 horsepower and 420 N·m of torque, the car emits excessive levels of pollutants such as NOx (nitrogen oxides). Under current European emission standards like Euro 6e – bis, the limits on various exhaust pollutants are extremely strict. The Civic TYPE R’s CO₂ emissions reach 189 grams per kilometer—far exceeding the standard Civic’s 114 grams per kilometer—making it difficult to comply with new regulatory requirements.

Additionally, Europe’s GSR2 safety regulations have also impacted the Civic TYPE R’s sales in the region. GSR2 mandates vehicles to be equipped with numerous electronic safety features, such as automatic emergency braking, intelligent speed assistance, and driver fatigue monitoring. However, it’s difficult for FL5 platform to accommodate these features, forcefully integrating them would not only be costly but also disrupt the car’s weight distribution, which further influences Honda’s decision to withdraw the Civic TYPE R from Europe. Moving forward, the sales focus will shift primarily to Japan, North America, Southeast Asia (including Thailand, Malaysia, the Philippines, and Indonesia), and the Middle East.

High-Performance EVs May Follow

Faced with these regulatory barriers, Honda, along with numerous traditional automakers, has been compelled to make strategic adjustments. Honda has to gradually cease the sales of its high-performance internal combustion engine (ICE) models in Europe and allocate resources toward electrification, such as vigorously promoting its e:N series electric vehicles. Consequently, Honda emphasizes that “electrification does not mean abandoning driving pleasure,” implying that future performance models may be introduced in the form of hybrid (HEV/PHEV) or pure electric (BEV) vehicles.

This adjustment may signal the “end of the era of performance car with internal combustion engine ,” a trend that has already been evident in the European market. Iconic performance vehicles like the Volkswagen Golf GTI and Ford Focus RS are also actively planning for their electrified future.
